Piet Botha has been known as a pivotal teacher, mentor and father-figure in the South African rock scene and now, more than ever before, he needs the support of all those who love him.
On Saturday 29 April, Piet Botha fractured vertebrae in his back when he fell off the stage at a performance in Margate. He had to undergo surgery to stilt the vertebrae and doctors told him that he would have to keep his movements to a minimum for the next few months.
As a musician this was probably the worst news he could have received; because of the injury he is unable to generate an income.
Established in 1984, Piet’s band Jack Hammer is SA’s longest-running rock band and with Botha at their helm, they have produced 13 albums to date. During the three decades, more than 10 honorary members have shared the stage as Jack Hammer with Paul ‘The Duke’ van de Waal, Tertius ‘Bean’ du Plessis and Johnathan Martin being the longest-lasting backbone of the band. On Tuesday 18 July – Piet’s 62nd birthday – musicians and admirers, who have played with Jack Hammer over the last 30 years, are all joining hands to host this spectacular fund-raising event in Piet’s honour.
